Ya memang lagu ini sudah diterjemahkan dalam berbagai Bahasa, dalam Bahasa Indonesia lagu ini sering kita dengar dinyanyikan oleh tim paduan suara Choir. Namun, tahukah anda bahwa lagu ini diangkat dari kisah tragis yang dialamai sang penciptanya, Horatio Spaffod. Memang sebagai umat kristiani kita hidup dengan iman yang tertuju kepada Kristus, tetapi terakadang iman kita diuji dengan tragedi yang sangat luar biasa. Lagu hymne berjudul “It is well with my soul” diciptakan oleh Horatio Spafford, seorang pengacara kaya dari Chicago. Pada tahun 1870, ia kehilangan anak laki-laki satu-satunya oleh karena penyakit demam berdarah. Satu tahun kemudian, terjadi tragedi bernama The Great Chicago Fire, dan itu membakar habis hampir seluruh assets properti yang ia miliki. Spaffod merasa hidup tidak terlihat begitu baik bagi diri dan keluarganya. Spafford akhirnya merencanakan sebuah perjalanan bersama istri nya dan ke empat anak perempuannya ke Eropa untuk menyaksikan seminar Namun, Spafford tiba-tiba mendapatkan masalah bisnis yang harus diselesaikan, sehingga ia mengatakan kepada istri dan keempat anak perempuannya untuk mendahului nya berlayar, ia mengatakan bahwa ia akan menyusul secepatnya. Spafford beserta istrinya menunjukkan kepada kita bentuk dari iman sejati. Kisah dari Horatio Spafford mengingatkan kita akan Kekristenan yang sesungguhnya. Kekristenan bukanlah tentang, “Jika Engkau mengikut Yesus, engkau akan memiliki hidup enak yang bebas masalah di dunia ini.” Tetapi, Kekristenan yang sesungguhnya adalah tentang, “Aku akan tetap berdiri untuk Yesus, apa pun permasalahan yang terjadi pada ku di dunia ini.” Seluruh tragedi yang menimpa Spafford tidak dapat merengut sukacitanya oleh karena penebusan yang Yesus Kristus telah berikan untuknya. Apa pun masalah yang sedang menimpa mu hari ini, percayalah, bahwa sesungguhnya tidak ada yang dapat melebihi keindahan pengorbanan yang Yesus telah berikan kepada mu.
